CHESS – Beamline Cross Chamber
Major beamline upgrades are happening at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source – CHESS. CHESS-U is a three-year, $15M upgrade project that will dramatically extend CHESS’s capabilities for cutting-edge innovative science and technology. Eleven experimental stations have been commissioned to provide 3600 hours per year of x-ray operations. As part of this upgrade to the CHESS facility, multiple unique vacuum chambers must be built. One of the first of these is the ID1A3 crossing chamber, the first beamline at CHESS which will see x-rays that cross before they reach the experimental stations. This unique crossing necessitates a custom, one-off vacuum chamber that will allow for monochromatic x-rays to pass through at a 27 degree angle. Inside this chamber, water-cooled copper blocks and tungsten radiation shielding serve as beam stops, so that the experimental stations are accessible while the synchrotron is in operation.
